Meet Gina!

Writer's picture: Savannah O.Savannah O.

Where are you from?

Originally from Cumbria, now living in East Sussex

Have you always been into crafting? When would you say you really began your creative journey?

Always, since I was little I’ve always loved anything arty. My nana got me into cross stitching at an early age.

How did you begin embroidery? Did you take classes, or have you been self taught?

It began with my nana at about the age of 6 or 7, then I went on to university to do a degree in textiles.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everywhere. I find inspiration in words, colours, patterns, things my children like and things I like!

What is your process for creating a new design?

I start by sketching an idea, once I’m happy with the basic idea I add colour using paint, pencils or pens. If I’m happy with it on paper I then draw it onto fabric and begin stitching. A lot of the time I will change my mind about placement, colour or stitch type so there is a lot of unpicking! If I’m happy with the stitches design it is then time to get all the digital files ready. These then get sent off so the fabric and packaging can be printed. Then it’s time for the all important photos! I do everything myself so it is a lengthy process!

Do you listen to anything while working? (Podcasts, music, tv shows, etc)

If I’m working in the house I’m usually working in front of a film or series on Netflix. If I’m in my studio I’m dancing away to tunes from the 90’s and 00’s!!

What is your favorite part of embroidery?

The process. How relaxing it is. It helps enormously with my anxiety.

What is your favorite thing to embroider? (people, plants, animals, abstract, etc).

Oooo this is a hard one! It changes, I’m continuously developing my skills so it depends on what skill I’m doing. Currently it’s text and thread painting. Next week it could be flamingos in stump work!

What has been the biggest impact, or made the biggest impact on you creatively?

Travel. I love colour and pattern, life would be incredibly boring without it. Travelling is the best way to discover new patterns and colour palettes.

Who are some artists you admire and are inspired by? (name as many as you want)

Argh. Too many to name! As a secondary art and textiles teacher I am constantly discovering new artists to show my students. They range from photographers, textile artists to ceramicists!!

Do you have hobbies besides embroidery?

I will try my hand at anything crafty and normally love it! However with a 5 year old and an 8 month old my time for hobbies is limited!

Is embroidery purely for self expression, or do you sell your work? (if you do sell, where can we find you?)

I sell kits on Etsy. I want to encourage as many people as possible to take up this amazing craft not only because it’s an amazing skill but the benefits to well being is great.

What are some of your favorite small businesses (crafting or otherwise)?

I’ve recently discovered Vintage Sweet Treats during lock down! They are a must! Also Little Pips and Embroidery by Hattie are two fantastic businesses run by amazing women.
